Verizon Announces the LG Lucid, a Mid-range LTE Device Available March 29 for $79.99
The LG Lucid, a device we first told you about back in February, will be available this Thursday, March 29 (also reported by DL), at Verizon stores for $79.99 after $50 mail-in rebate. As expected, it's a mid-range 4G LTE device that packs a punch, but without some of the top tier features we have seen in some other devices over the last few months. It has a 4″ display, only not of the HD variety. You will find a dual-core processor though, front and rear cameras, Android 2.3, and again, that crazy low price. If you were looking for an affordable, yet semi-powerful phone for your kids, this might be one to consider.

Warning: Google IO 2012 about to sell out within minutes
Registration for Google's annual developer conference opens today, and we expect it to sell out within the hour. The 2009 event sold out in 90 days. The 2010 event sold out in 10 days. Last year's event sold out in 59 minutes.
At approximately 7:00 AM PT, users can attempt to register for Google IO 2012 using their Google+ account. Payments will be accepted through Google Wallet, so make sure your account is already setup to save time.
This year the conference was extended one day and moved to June 27-29th. We expect Google to share the first details about the next version of Android, codenamed Jelly Bean, and learn more about the next version of Google TV.
Google raised the general attendee fee from $450 to $900, so make sure you really want to go if you plan to sign up. Pretty much all of the keynotes and sessions will be available on YouTube, so you won't be missing out on much of the information that gets released. Google is also hosting free viewing parties around the globe.
The main benefits to actually being there in person are the networking with your peers and the free devices that Google gives away every year. Last year they gave away a Galaxy Tab 10.1, Sony Xperia Play, and a Chromebook. This year we think they will give away the rumored Nexus tablet.

Verizon Offers Up DROID Charge for Free, Drops the “DROID” Brand
At one point in time, the "DROID" tag was saved for phones that were thought to be the biggest and most bad ass phones on the planet. The tag slowly started to lose its effectiveness with the DROID 2, but officially hit rock bottom when Verizon and Samsung decided that the Charge was worthy of carrying the title. We argued in our DROID Charge review that it had no business under the DROID brand as it was released with a single-core processor and low level specs at a time when dual-core phones were about to rule the "all machines." Other than its beautiful 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus screen, the Charge failed to impress just about anyone.
As of today, Verizon has apparently seen the light, offering it up for free (originally $299 at launch) and dropping the DROID brand from it. The phone is now known as the "Charge by Samsung" and has been pulled from droiddoes.com. Actually, on its product page, they have yet to remove the term "DROID," but that will likely happen any day. That is if it lasts that long. Normally when we see a top tier phone drop to "free," it's on the verge of disappearing for good.
On a related note, droiddoes.com only includes Motorola phones now. DROID brand about to die or will it become a Moto-only thing going forward? Does anyone care?

Google Discusses Google Voice Integration with Other Carriers Beyond Sprint
When Sprint announced that they had formed some sort of partnership with Google to allow easy Google Voice setup on their phones, I was jealous. Google Voice is easily one of my favorite apps, something I have mentioned a handful of times now. But with Sprint's partnership, Google has given their customers an MMS option that normal GV users do not have access to. As most GV users know, the only real downside to the service is the fact that picture and video messages (MMS) cannot be sent or received. Sprint users can though, in a round about way through their email.
So when we heard today's news that Google is in talks with other carriers to offer a similar partnership, we couldn't help but get a little excited. Well, not too excited. As you may recall, Google said that they were in talks with other carriers back in October to allow for MMS-to-email forwarding, only we have yet to see the service work on any other device besides one that is connected to Sprint.
The SMS and MMS game is nothing but pure profit for carriers, and Google Voice is something that could serve to cut those down dramatically. I'm not saying that I don't believe that we will have GV on a variety of other carriers with MMS support in the near future, but it would surprise me a bit. So cross some toes and hope that Google and others can come to agreement. In the mean time, thank Buddha that carriers haven't chosen to block the service like they have done with Google Wallet.
