We have said a few times before that if you are looking to get an Android tablet right now, the Nexus 7 is the way to go. Pure Google Experience, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a low price point are just a few of the awesome headlines for this device. Today, Google is launching their creation in Japan, and hoping to tap into a new market.
At an event today, Google’s Eric Schmidt said he was excited for the launch in Japan. That market has the third largest number of Google Play installs in the world, certainly a big market for the Nexus 7. It remains to be seen if the 7″ tablet will take hold in Japan but if it’s past launches are any indication, it should do just fine.

With the official Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.1) update out for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus (toro) as build JRO03O, we were wondering how long it would take for the factory image to be released. The answer to that is, today.
When Google introduced Jelly Bean at this year’s Google I/O event in San Francisco, one of the features that struck as us as really cool was Jelly Bean’s new notifications. With Jelly Bean, some applications are able to show interactive notifications and also expandable notifications that allow you to take certain actions straight from the notification bar.
For now, only certain applications support expandable notifications. But if anything is for certain, it’s that Google will be adding more and more of these interactive notifications as time goes by. Here’s a quick rundown of the specific apps that support the new system and what they look like.

Now that most of the Galaxy Nexus owners in the building are all running official Jelly Bean (Android 4.1), the reports of “FoxFi no longer works!” are starting to flood in. We aren’t exactly sure what changed in Jelly Bean to cause some tethering apps to quit working, FoxFi being the most notable, but that’s the card we were dealt. So rather than spending the next 3 days testing each and every tethering app, we thought we would turn directly to the DL community, a group of people that probably tether a heck of a lot more than us home office dwellers, and ask which app they picked up?
We gave you a wireless tethering option that doesn’t require root from SVTP, but it’s also $15. ClockworkMod Tether should work just fine, but it’s a USB tethering service rather than wireless. Barnacle is a free wireless option, but it requires root.

In a recent outing, Google’s Eric Schmidt made one thing very clear – Google has no Maps application in the works for iOS devices. According to Schmidt, the decision was entirely Apple’s and he still feels that they should have stuck with Google’s app. Both Google and Apple were in constant communication on the matter, but in the long run, Apple decided to go with a homegrown alternative instead.
When Jelly Bean hit the streets, one of the features that had Android fans chirping was expandable notifications and other interactive things you could do from the bar.
Concerning news this morning for any Samsung owner who is running TouchWiz on their phone. A little slice of HTML code was found that when clicked, can reset the Galaxy SII instantly to factory settings. The factory reset could also be triggered by a QR code or via NFC. The culprit seems to be the TouchWiz skin that Samsung has stuck by on top of Android. When this malicious code is triggered through a device, it pops up the dialer which then automatically activates a factory reset code, causing the phone to wipe itslef with no option for stoppage.

While speaking to the Korea Times, an unnamed company official has revealed that the successor to Samsung’s popular Galaxy S3 smartphone may be released as early as March 2013. The updated handset is thought to feature a 5-inch OLED display and full LTE support. The source claims that the Korean firm intends to unveil the new flagship device at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February, with plans to hit retail in March 2013. The official stated that the handset will feature an increased screen size of five inches (up from 4.8 on the S3), as well as a more powerful quad-core processor. Although it’s thought that there will be aesthetic changes to the device, the rectangular, curved-edge form-factor is unlikely to change significantly. It’s important to note that this report is unconfirmed and can therefore not be relied upon for accuracy. However, if true, the move could be seen as a direct response to Apple’s new iPhone 5 handset, announced earlier this week. While the iPhone 5 will undoubtedly prove to be a popular handset, many were disappointed with its lack of innovative features, a perception that was only perpetuated by uncharacteristic pre-announcement leaks. Samsung is Apple’s key competitor in the smartphone market, with the two companies currently engaged in multiple law suits across the globe. Over the last week or so, the holiday lineup on Verizon has really started to take shape. Most companies took to press events at the end of August and beginning of September to announce their Q4 devices for Big Red, while others have remained slightly silent. Thanks to a handful of leaks and rumors though, we have been given a clear enough picture that we can at least start to talk about it. Verizon may have introduced questionable shared data plans, however, they still have the biggest LTE network in the land, and are also about to take back the “best device lineup in the land” crown as well. Q4 of 2012 is going to be a time to remember in the history of smartphones.

We reviewed the Nexus 7 back in July and still consider it the best Android tablet on the market. Its combination of size, power, specs, and price make it almost unbeatable for any Android enthusiast or casual tablet user.
The GT-i9260 could potentially be the Samsung Galaxy Nexus 2. Since the original Galaxy Nexus rolls with the model number GT-i9250, it would make sense that the next version of it would jump up in numbering sequence. To add to that thought, remember that Samsung almost always keeps follow-up phones on a similar model number scheme, much like we have seen with the Galaxy S (i9000) to S2 (i9100) to S3 (i9300).
For anyone that uses the Apex or Nova third party launchers, you can go pick up their updates in Google Play this morning. For Nova, there are a ton of fixes and it also adds in some Jelly Bean goodies and “Project Butter”

What better way to start your week than with some Jelly Bean upgrades? Samsung announced today that the rollout of Android 4.1 to the International version of the Galaxy S3 is starting. Google Now, Project Butter and the rest of the goodies in Jelly Bean will soon be smothered with TouchWiz and sent out to devices across Europe. No word on the upgrades for this side of the pond, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed.
Samsung also announced all of the devices that they plan on upgrading at some point and it’s a fairly extensive list. The Galaxy SII and SII Skyrocket, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1 and the Galaxy Note 10.1 will all be getting Jelly Bean at some point. Again, no mention of a timeframe for these upgrades, just that they will be coming at some point.

With many new devices launching on Sprint’s network that support 4G LTE, the company is making a good push to have the service be made available to as many customers as possible. Just a couple of weeks ago, they announced that 100 cities in the U.S. would soon see the upgrade and here we are today, with few new ones to announce.
For anyone looking to score Motorola’s new RAZR HD, you can finally pick one up. Hope you don’t mind waiting for it to go through US customs though. The device is currently being sold through a Brazilian retailer for approximately $500, which seems to be a pretty good deal, yeah? If you’re thinking of importing the device and hoping it to work on a CDMA network though, I wouldn’t bet on it.
Although, you’re better off waiting for its official US release sometime “before the holidays.”

bit.ly Samsung Galaxy S III Review by Phones 4u. There’s been loads of hype about the Galaxy S 3 and we’ve been itching to get up close and personal with it. Well, the wait is finally over and we’ve managed to put together a full review of the latest smarphone to hit the Korean manufacturer’s Galactic range. Running Android Ice Cream Sandwich and taking its cue from nature in terms of aesthetics, the device features a rounded, pebble-inspired chassis. This proves a happy home for a whopping 4.8″ SuperAMOLED HD screen that lives up to expectation with crystal clear visuals. A 1.4GHz quad-core processor powers things along, meaning that watching HD video (shot at 1080p via the 8 megapixel camera) is an experience in itself. And that’s not all, thanks to a plethora of intuitive multimedia features such as S-Voice, Sammy’s version of Apple’s awesome Siri voice recognition software, wireless file sharing from S-Beam, intuitive screen management via Smart Stay and Allshare Play which allows the streaming of digital content to other DLNA enabled devices. There’s a whole host of useful native apps and software too, plus connectivity options including NFC, Wi-Fi and 4G (if you live somewhere that supports the superfast network), all of which make the S III definitely look like the smartphone big dog. Yesterday, we pointed out a conversation that Motorola’s Punit Soni was having with DROID Bionic owners over the fact that the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the device has not arrived on time. Soni made it clear that the new group of Moto leaders was going to do everything in their power to not only make sure situations like this do not happen in the future, but also wanted people to know that they are working to fix the problem now. One of the first plans of attack was to get a new deadline for the Bionic, something he followed through on this morning.
